Nepal Idol is a popular Nepali television reality singing show that is also a part of the international franchise “Idol”. For the most part, it was the first international franchise in the history of Nepali television. And, AP1 TV broadcasted the show back in April, 2017. The series aims to find outstanding new solo artists from across the country and the winners are decided through the viewer’s votes. As of now, the show has aired 4 seasons and 112 episodes and has many positive responses from its audiences. In this article, we will discuss about the journey of the show that made it such a hit in the country.
Nepal Idol: Format
As Nepal Idol is a franchise of Idol, it follows the format set by Freemantle Media from the Idol Bible that is similar to other idol series. Basically, it includes provision for hosts, judges and various kinds of performance stages for the season. Typically, the show allows for either single or dual hosts. Also, the hosts can be of the same gender or of varying ones.
Next, the judges consist of two groups from the start of the audition to the end of the season. For the preliminary auditions, a group of music industry representatives judge the contestants which are not televised. On the other hand, a different group of 3-5 people judge the contestants from the televised auditions to the grand finale of the show.
Lastly, there are mainly five performance rounds ranging from Auditions, The Theatre, Piano rounds, Gala rounds and the Grand Finale. All these rounds have various judging criteria’s and narrow down the contestants to three for the grand finale. For the most part, the general public can only vote for their desired contestants from the Gala rounds. However, the Grand finale winner is selected through the highest number of votes.
Season 1
The first season of Nepal Idol began its auditions in 25th January 2017 across seven locations namely Nepalgunj, Butwal, Narayangarh, Birgunj, Biratnagar, Pokhara and Kathmandu. The project head for this show was Suresh Poudhyal with Nhyoo Bajracharya, Indira Joshi and Kali Prasad Baskota as judges. Similarly, the winner for the first season was Buddha lama from Pokhara with Nishan Bhattrai and Pratap das as the first and second runner ups. Also, there were many guest appearances from popular people like Hari Bansha Acharya, Mingma Sherpa, Kamal Khatri, Ciney Gurung and many more.
Season 2
After the official announcement for the shows return in early 2018, the auditions for Season 2 began on March 20 at Bhairawa. Most of the auditions venue was different from season one with Kathmandu being the sole exception. Similarly, notable changes include replacement of the former host Sushil Nepal to Asif shah and other simple changes. Meanwhile, Ravi Oad won the second season of Nepal idol officially on the grand finale held on 21st December, 2018. Some of the guest appearances include Astha Raut, Buddha lama, Anuradha Koirala and more.

Season 3
The third season for Nepal Idol was announced on July 13, 2019 and officially began the auditions on 17th September, 2019 in Pokhara. Also, the auditions were done in the digital format due to the fear of C0VID. Ans, the selected candidates were called to the capital for the studio rounds. Similarly, other changes include the replacement of Reema Bishwokarma for Mami Gosh. Then,the first episode officially aired on 19th December, 2019. However, the show was delayed for around 139 days due to the pandemic and resumed only on 6th august, 2020. Similarly, the grand finale was held on 28th August, 2020 and Sajja Chajlagain with Pravin Bedwal and Kiran kumar Bhujel as the 1st and 2nd runner up respectively. Some of the guest appearances include Najjir Hussain, Kunti Moktan, Buddha Lama, Ravi Oad and others.
Season 4
The season 4 of Nepal Idol was aired on AP1 TV. The show officially aired from 9th December, 2021 with some notable changes. Firstly, the judges from the previous seasons were replaced with new faces like Sambhujeet Baskota, Sugam Pokharel, and Subhani Moktan. Similarly, the auditions were also taken through the digital media through the APON App. Some of the notable guest appearances till now include Sushant Kc, Sanup Paudhyal, Alok Shree and others. Also, there were many positive responses from the audiences. Bhupendra Thapa Magar won the title of Nepal Idol Season 4.
